About Manipur Police

The history of Manipur Police began with the arrival of the British on 27th April, 1891 when the State Military Police of Manipur was set up under the command of Assistant Political Agent, Mr. Crawford with a strength of 1 European Officer, 14 Local Officers, 48 NCOs and 320 Sepoys. At the time of merger of Manipur with India on 15th October, 1949, Manipur had only 5 Police Stations and 7 Outposts with a meagre strength of 376 men.

Today the force is headed by DGP with 6 ADGPs, 10 IGPs, 10 DIGPs, 27 SPs and other officers. The different branches of the Police are 1) Civil Police, 2) Manipur Rifles, 3) India Reserve Battalion, 4) Intelligence, 5) Manipur Police Training College, 6) Manipur Police Telecom Organisation, 7) Narcotics and Affairs of Border, 8) Traffic Police, 9) Centre for Motor Transport and Workshop, 10) Women Police, 11) Home Guard, 12) Village Defense Force, 13) Special Investigation Team and 14) Forensic Science Laboratories. The sanctioned strength of the whole force is 34,771. There are 107 Police Stations which includes 9 Women Police Stations and 62 Outposts.

With the increase in the strength, the State Police has been able to bring immense improvement in law and order situation, prevention and detection of crime and catering to the security needs of the common people. The State Police will continue to strive for higher level of professionalism with renewed commitment through Community Oriented Policing.

CCTNS Project is connecting all the 107 Police Stations and 115 Higher Offices within the State for sharing information efficiently. It also connects all the different Police Organisations across the country so that information is shared and utilized.
